TMd, Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

Clenching & Grinding

If you’re waking up in the morning with a tight jaw or sore neck, it may be that you are clenching or grinding your teeth during the night.  Believe it or not, excessive clenching or grinding of the teeth is actually quite common and may affect people at various points throughout their life.

This condition is often stress related and a yoga membership may be all it takes! However, for others, it may be more severe and can lead to deterioration of the jaw joint and literally, shorter teeth.

What to expect

At Shumack Dental, 3D scans of the teeth are taken over time. By overlaying the scans, the specific degree of wear on the teeth can be assessed.  We assess the jaw joint for any abnormal ‘clicks’ and take a detailed sleep history to work out a diagnosis.

A treatment plan will then be arranged that may include a nightguard for relief of symptoms and prevention of further damage or cracking.

Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

Are you constantly tired and often waking in the morning without feeling refreshed?

Sleep apnoea is an under-recognised and under-diagnosed medical condition affecting many Australians today. There have been links between sleep apnoea and a wide variety of chronic health conditions such as hypertension, heart disease and even death if not treated appropriately.

Symptoms include:

  • Loud snoring

  • Daytime sleepiness and

  • Restless sleep.

At Shumack Dental we take a detailed sleep history and assess for signs that may be associated with sleep apnoea.  There are several ways to treat the condition including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP machines), a dental appliance designed to bring the jaw forward and several surgical procedures.
